Big Second Half Lifts NDC To 88-70 Win Monday!

The Notre Dame College Falcons had waited nine days since they had last played. After letting one slip away against Frotsburg the Falcons made sure that did not happen again with a 88-70 win at Murphy Gym over West Virginia Wesleyan on Monday night. Jordan Roland paced NDC with 22 points- John Godinez added 18- and- Jordan Burton notched 15 in the victory.

Burton talked about the team being ready to go from the outset:

"With this COVID situation we don't have a lot of fans, so we need to bring our own energy,"Burton mentioned.

Elijah Barnett agreed:

" We needed to keep it going, stay energized for the whole game so we could get the win,"Barnett added.

Coach Mark Richmond talked about his team getting closer to putting together a full 40 minutes:

" We played pretty well tonight. We made some mistakes. We just keep telling these guys that they are not going to be perfect, we just need to move on to the next play. We need to limit our mistakes. We don't need things to snowball on us, you make your mistake, and move on. I feel like we did that tonight,"Richmond explained.

NDC shot 52 percent from the field-and- 52 percent from the 3-point line (12-22)- and- 71 percent from the free throw line (12-17.) NDC out rebounded the Bobcats 38-28. They had 14 assists- and- 14 turnovers.

Barnett talked about how important possessions are:

" We are just trying to get possession and get the ball back. We need to run our sets, and get out to shooters."

Wesleyan (0-8 0-8 MEC) was paced by 23 points from Daylin Lee- and- 20 points from Jaylin Reed. The Bobcats shot 44 percent from the floor- 22 percent (5-23) from the 3-point line- and- 77 percent (17-22) at the free throw line. They had nine assists-and- 18 turnovers as a team.

NDC (2-4 2-4 MEC) got off to a quick start, as John Godinez scored eight points early, and it was 14-8 in the early going after three Godinez free throws.

Burton talked about Godinez:

"John is feisty, he is small. He plays hard every night though. He is proof that hard work pays off."

Richmond gave his thought on Godinez:

"You could tell John was ready to go all week this week. He has earned the right to start. He is a Freshman so he is going to learn some things, but he is going to be a good player."

After a Burton 3-pointer NDC led by eight (27-19) with 9:02 in the opening half. The lead was cut to three twice, and it would be 37-34 Falcons at the intermission.

Richmond talked about the end of the half:

" We made some mistakes late in the first half. We did a good job on the glass, but did not convert. I was proud we held them off at the end of the half though."

NDC shot 47 percent in the first half- 36 percent (4-11) from the 3-point line- and- 75 percent (3-4) at the free throw line. They led the rebounding battle 15-13 in the first half, getting five on the offensive glass.

The Bobcats shot 56 percent in the opening half- 33 percent from the 3-point line (3-9-) and- shot at a 75 percent clip (3-4) at the free throw line.

After the Bobcats scored the first bucket of the second half, NDC scored the next five. The lead would grow to 11 (54-43) after a Barnett old fashioned three-point play. The Falcons would lead by double digits the rest of the way, as the largest lead would be 23 (83-60) after a slam by Obinna Ugwuakazi at the 1:14 mark.

Burton talked about closing out the game tonight, and getting some contributions from the bench:

" Marquise (Johnson) was ready. We are a young team, we gotta close games out when we got possession and we got the lead. I thought we did that tonight."

Barnett agreed:

" Marquise, and John amongst others helped us out a lot tonight. I feel like the great thing about this team is we got a bunch of guys where it can be a different guy every night. We will be tough to beat. Anybody can do it."

Richmond talked about some positives:

"We did a good job of playing inside-out. We pulled away in the second half mainly because we made them collapse more and got some rhythm 3-pointer's. We didn't get good three's in the first half, but as I have been saying we are learning. Most of the 3-pointer's were assisted which was nice. This is who we have to be, and who we are going to be."

We wanted to get a bunch of guys in the game tonight, and I thought we accomplished that."
