Career Night For Willis Not Enough As Furious Falcons Rally Falls Short.

The Notre Dame College Falcons got a career high 38 points in 38 minutes from Jaedon Willis but it was not enough in a 97-91 loss to Glenville State College at the Waco Center. With the loss NDC falls to 4-1 and 2-1 in the MEC. The Pioneers improve to 3-2 and 1-1 in the MEC after the victory for them.

NDC would jump out to a 6-0 lead to start this one after a John Godinez layup just 75 seconds in. GSC would take the lead 9-8 before Willis and Matthew Allman would trade 3-point baskets. Willis would convert an old fashioned three-point play and it would be a one point game (15-14 GSC.) Another Willis 3-pointer this time from behind the arc would tie the game at 17 with 13:48 in half one. Just past the midway point of the half NDC would go on a 5-0 run and Tyland Crawford would give them a 26-21 lead with 9:21 in the half. Zane Desouza would hit back to back 3-pointer's to put the Pioneers up five but NDC would fight back and Willis would continue his hot shooting by hitting back to back 3-pointer's of his own to make it 34-33 NDC with 4:59 in the first half. After a Crawford layup tied the game at 36 following another Allman 3-pointer the Pioneers would get a 3-pointer from Nick Edwards and another from DeSouza before a Crawford layup made it 42-38 GSC at the half.

Willis led NDC with 19 points in the opening half, while Crawford had six. NDC shot 47 percent in the opening stanza, 36 percent (4-11) from the 3-point line, and went 4-4 from the free throw line.

The Falcons went ahead 57-56 after another old fashioned three-point play by Willis with 12:37 on the clock. That lead was short lived as Allman connected from the 3-point line. After a Crawford basket tied it again, this time at 59 it was Williams with the traditional three-point play to put GSC back on top. Daylin Lee cut the lead to three (66-63) before the Pioneers went on a 9-0 run capped by a pair of Williams free throws to make the lead 12 (75-63) with 7:12 on the clock. The Pioneers looked to be in command up 91-78 with 1:49 to go. The Falcons would after a Daylin Lee 3-pointer with 50 seconds to go were within five (92-87) and would get to within four (92-88) after Mike Sampson split a pair of free throws with 38 seconds. They would get to within four one more time, but that is as close as they would get.

The Falcons were led by 38 points from Willis, Crawford added 11, and DeAirius Barker had 10. They shot 46 percent as a team, 38 percent (9-24) from the 3-point line, and 78 percent (18-23) from the free throw line. The Falcons had 14 assists and seven turnovers in the contest.

Mike Sampson who had eight points, and eight rebounds tonight was brutally honest about his performance:

" I didn't play well. I'm not even playing to my potential. Just be out there cruising, "Sampson explained.

Coach Mark Richmond gave his thoughts:

" We weren't able to get enough key stops in the second half. I thought we traded baskets a little bit and just needed to find a way to get stops down the stretch., "Richmond said.

Glenville State was led by 27 points, 11 rebounds, and five assists from John Williams, Allman added 22, DeSouza scored 14, and Edwards stuffed the stat sheet with 14 points, 14 assists, and nine rebounds. The Pioneers shot 50 percent from the field, 43 percent (17-40) from the 3-point line, and 70 percent (16-23) at the free throw line. The Pioneers won the rebounding battle 40-34. They had 14 assists and seven turnovers in the contest.

Richmond gave his final thoughts on this one:

" I was proud of our effort but we needed to be better to get this one on the road, we'll use this as a learning experience and get back to work with another tough test against Concord on Saturday."
