The Notre Dame College Falcons and Lake Erie College Storm battled at the Osborne Center on Saturday. In a game that featured eight ties and seven lead changes the Storm ultimately prevailed 86-78. With the victory Lake Erie improved to 8-6 and 3-3 in the GMAC. NDC fell to 8-4 and 4-2 in the MEC.
Coach Tim Koenig gave his thoughts afterwards:
" Very disappointing loss today. The biggest disappointment was that they out-worked us today. We have to make shots. We had two big front ends of one and ones that we missed. We missed seven or eight layups and dunks. We did not have all five guys play hard at both ends the whole game today. Obviously we have to rebound and play defense better as well. We got out-rebounded and it is hard to win when the other team shoots 50 percent from the field. We just have to get better."
NDC was paced by Will Vorhees who had 25 points and grabbed 16 rebounds in the contest. Larenz Thurman added 16 points and six assists-while- Bruce Hodges had 14 in the contest. The Falcons shot 40 percent as a team- 31 percent (10-32) from the 3-point line. They shot at a 70 percent clip (14-20) from the free throw line. NDC had 15 assists and seven turnovers in the loss.
The Storm were paced by Gabe Kynard who poured in a game high 30 points- Erron James had 20- Brogan Scott added 13- and- David Dunnigan added 12. The Storm shot 50 percent as a team- 33 percent (9-32) from the 3-point line- and- shot at a 77 percent clip (17-22) at the free throw line. The Storm won the rebounding battle 41-38. They had 16 assists and 10 turnovers as a team.
The two teams would go back and forth in the early going as the game would be knotted at 12 at the first media timeout. Lake Erie would lead 23-22 at the next media. The final media of the first half the game wold be tied at 31. Ultimately the halftime score would be deadlocked at 40 at the intermission. Vorhees would lead the Falcons with 13 in the opening half- while Hodges added 12 to go along with four rebounds and three steals. NDC shot 40 percent in the opening half- 33 percent from the 3-point line. They shot at a 70 percent clip (7-10) from the free throw line. The Falcons would have eight assists and four turnovers in the opening half.
Lake Erie was led by Kynard with 17 points in the opening half- while Dunnigan added six. The Storm shot 50 percent from the field- 21 percent (3-14) from the 3-point line- and- 90 percent (9-10) at the free throw line. The Storm led on the boards 21-17. They had seven assists and seven turnovers in the half.
The second half got off to a good start for NDC as Scarberry and Thurman would hit from the 3-point line. After a Vorhees layup the Falcons held a 55-49 lead with 13:27 to go.
Koenig talked about what changed in that span when the run was made:
" We hit some shots. We had five guys flying at the ball and contesting shots. We had three ball deflections in the span of four possessions."
The Falcons led by three (59-56) after a pair of Thurman free throws at the halfway mark of the second half. Lake Erie would regain the lead before a Thurman 3-pointer put NDC up by two (62-60) with 7:35 to go. Angelo Cugini would hit a 3-ball of his own to give the Falcons a five point lead. The Storm would then go on a 9-0 spurt before a pair of Thurman free throws would cut it to 69-67 with 4:28 to go. The Storm would then take control with a 11-2 run to go up by 11 with 1:40 to go. The Storm would secure the win down the stretch.
Koenig talked about the loss afterwards:
"We gave up to many open shots today. We need all five guys to play all out every possession and that did not happen today. We need to rebound better. I need to coach better. We have to get better and we will. It is league play from here on out so we will be ready for Glenville State on Thursday."
NDC will be back in action Thursday night when they take on Glenville State. Tip time from Murphy Gym is set for 7:30 PM. As always you can catch all the action on NotreDameFalcons.com
