Defense, Sampson Give NDC Spark As They Defeat Concord!

The Notre Dame College Falcons got off to a 7-0 start, fell behind in the first half, but then used a pair of steals, and two dunks right before halftime that was part of a 13-0 run that turned a eight point deficit into a five point lead inside Murphy Gym. NDC would use that momentum to win 71-56. They got 14 points- 13 rebounds- and- six steals from Sampson. Jordan Roland paced the Falcons with 21 points, while Jordan Burton tallied 14 points in the contest. NDC improved to 3-5 on the season, while Concord dropped to 4-4.

NDC got five points from John Godinez, and then a basket by Sampson that gave them a 7-0 lead in the early going. It would be 11-4 NDC before the Mountain Lions would grab the lead with a run of their own. It was 32-24 in favor of the Mountain Lions before a Roland 3-pointer, then a pair of steals, and dunks cut the halftime lead to one (32-31.)

Mike Sampson talked about providing his team a spark at the end of the half:

" We really needed a spark, and I needed to bring that. Needed to get guys hyped, get the bench hyped, and we finished the half strong, "Sampson explained.

In the opening half NDC shot 37 percent from the field- 27 percent (3-11) from the 3-point line- and- 50 percent (2-4) from the free throw line. Sampson stuffed the stat sheet in the opening half with 10 points- seven rebounds- and- five steals in the first 20 minutes. Godinez added seven of his own.

Richmond talked about his team's play in the first half:

" We did not play that great in the first half. We really did not shoot the ball that well. For whatever reason after that first few minutes we relaxed, and stopped doing what got us there,"Richmond mentioned.

Concord was led by Davion Moore with nine points- and- Malik Johnson with eight in the opening stanza. They shot 39 percent as a team- 25 percent (2-8) from the 3-point line- and- 71 percent (10-14) at the free throw line.

NDC carried that momentum from the opening half to score the first six points of the second half to go up 37-32 after a Javontae Jones hoop. All told it was a 13-0 run by NDC. Concord would again make a run to go up by two (45-43,) before Burton hit his first of four 3-pointer's on the night to give NDC the lead back at the 9:51 mark. Two more Burton 3-pointer's would make it 56-51 NDC with just under five minutes left.

Sampson talked about Burton:

"Burton can get hot from the 3-point line, as you saw tonight. He is a really savy player as well."

Burton's fourth 3-pointer, and then a pair of Roland free throws stretched the lead to 10.

Roland talked about how much he has been working on his free throw shooting since the Frostburg game:

" I feel the Frostburg loss was on me, and it still hurts to this day. So I practiced free throw shooting a lot during practice, and before practice. Being a leader on the team, I can't let things like that happen,"Roland said.

NDC would cruise to victory down the stretch.

Sampson talked about taking pride in his rebounding:

" I take much pride in rebounding. I have a knack, God given ability for it. I am humbled to have my third double-double of the season, and second in a row. "

The final stats for NDC had Roland with 21 points, and four assists- Sampson had 14 points- 13 rebounds- and- six steals, while Burton knocked down four 3-pointer's on his way to 14 points- and- he dished out five assists.

Sampson talked about Roland as well:

"JR is a speedster. He does a really good job of getting it to the rim. I wouldn't wish two other guards to be my teammates than the two Jordan''s."

Richmond talked about the teams hard work paying off:

" Overall I am really proud of how hard we played. We made some mistakes, but we had some tough practices this week, and our hard work is paying off. We did a really good job of moving the ball tonight as well, and taking care of it. I was really proud of the 16 assists, and I will take eight turnovers every game for the rest of the year."

As a team for the game NDC shot 44 percent from the field- 35 percent (7-20) from the 3-point line- and- 80 percent (12-15) at the free throw line.

Concord was led by Mohamed Bundu and Davion Moore with 11- while Malik Johnson scored 10. The Mountain Lions shot 29 percent from the field- 21 percent (5-24) from the 3-point line- and- 71 percent (17-24) from the free throw line.

Richmond talked about his teams defensive effort today:

" We used multiple defenses', and that is who we need to be. I was really proud of some guys. Coye (Campbell) is one of the older guys on our team, and has probably played more basketball than anyone. He knows when to make the right play. He made some big passes, and had some big rebounds. He did knock down one three as well. Javontae (Jones) is just learning. He is starting to show flashes. Elijah (Barnett) is another guy who is just starting to scratch the surface. He competes hard as well, and will get better with more experience. It was our man to man defense that won us this game though."

Roland talked about it being a complete team effort:

" Today we played team basketball on both ends of the court. On offense we had great spacing and made plays for each other, which helped us get this win."

Richmond talked about sticking with his guns in this one as well:

" Concord started big, and thought they could take advantage of the size advantage on the glass (Concord won the rebounding battle 38-37,) but we stuck to our guns. We have stuck with our three guard lineup. The five guys who are starting have really earned our trust. That first group has gotten us off to a good start these last couple games. We will look when Tyland (Crawford) gets back and see if that three-guard lineup is the way we want to stay."

Richmond continued and talked about Burton:

"Anytime a guy is +28 in the plus minus, that is a big number."
