Efficient Offense Propels NDC To Resounding Win Over Bobcats

The Notre Dame College Falcons and Frostburg State University Bobcats met inside Murphy Gym on Wednesday night. NDC tied for the second most rebounds in a game this year (50,) had the second highest 3-point percentage in a game (46.7 percent on 14-30 shooting,) and had the fourth most assists in a game (20) in a 93-76 win. Redshirt sophomore Devin Haid paced the Falcons with 26 points, redshirt junior RJ Ogom scored 18 points and pulled down 11 rebounds, the most points in a game for Ogom since November 21st. Trent Williams knocked down three triples on his way to 14 points, and Josh Dames added 11 points and 11 rebounds. With the win the Falcons improve to 13-11 and 8-10 in the MEC. The Bobcats were led by Koby Baptiste with 22 points and 10 rebounds, Logan Lewis chipped in 14, and Jay'Shaun Freeman tallied 13. With the loss the Bobcats fall to 2-23 and 2-16 in the MEC.

"For the most part we defended. We got off to a good start. We made some plays at the end of the first half to extend the lead which was huge in the outcome. We shared the ball on offense (20 assists,) and got major contributions from a bunch of guys. Was happy to get the win," NDC head coach Mark Richmond explained.

"Glad we handled business. The ball found everyone and people played big. Finally got a win at home and we needed it to build some confidence going into Saturday against Fairmont State," Williams said.

NDC started out hot from the 3-point line in this one. Zane McCarthy hit a three for the Bobcats to open the scoring before Ogom and Gbolahan Adio each knocked down a 3-ball. FSU lead 14-11 after a pair of Baptiste free throws. Haid converted a four point play to give NDC a 18-16 lead at the 13:20 mark of the first half. That lead was stretched to eight (24-16) at the 11:50 mark of the first half as freshman Robbie Cass got to the cup for a layup. The lead was trimmed to four (36-32) after a Freeman 3-pointer with 3:10 until halftime. NDC would close the half on a 12-2 run as sophomore Jevontae Jones hit a triple with 17 ticks until halftime.

"We gave up 9 or 10 offensive rebounds early but we cleaned that up. The 3-pointer definitely saved us in the first half. We made the extra pass. Just don't want to fall in love with the three," Richmond added.

NDC was led by Ogom with 14 points and seven rebounds in the first half while Haid added 12. As a team NDC shot 44.8 percent from the field, 9-14 from the 3-point line (64.2 percent,) 13-14 at the free throw line (92.9 percent) while they had 10 assists and eight turnovers in the opening stanza. NDC led the rebounding battle 23-16 in the first half.

The Bobcats were led by Baptiste with 11 and Freeman with five in the first half. They shot 35.1 percent from the field, 33.3 percent (5-15) from the 3-point line, and 3-5 (60 percent) from the free throw line in the first 20 minutes. The Bobcats had six assists and five turnovers in the half.

NDC would extend the lead to 18 (58-40) on a Williams triple at the 18:16 mark. The Bobcats got to within 11 (61-50) as Lewis made a layup but NDC would score the next 12 points to open up a 23 point lead (73-50) as Haid again connected from 3-point range. He would go five of his first five from the 3-point line. Richmond talked about Haid:

"We need Devin to be an aggressive scorer. Sometimes he thinks too much. If he is in the right mindset he can score with anyone. We need to keep getting him good looks. He has been more patient of late."

The Bobcats would get to within 15 (80-65) on a Lewis jumper at the 5:09 mark. Jones would score on a layup and then Haid would glide to the hoop for a jam to make this a 19 point lead and the Falcons would cruise from that point on.

As a team NDC shot 46.2 percent from the field, 46.7 percent (14-30) from the 3-point line, 73.1 percent (19-26) from the free throw line. NDC had 20 assists and 14 turnovers in the contest. The Falcons also won the rebounding battle 50-34.

Richmond talked about Ogom:

RJ was active on the glass tonight. He also got to the free throw line. He got some easy ones around the rim. He is an important piece for us. When he is healthy he is as good as anyone down there."

The Bobcats shot 40.3 percent from the floor, 28.6 percent (6-21) from the 3-point line, and 50 percent (8-16) from the free throw line.

"Just doing what I can to help my team win, and affecting the game on both ends," Dames mentioned.

Ogom gave the final thought:

"We came out and played hard. We moved the ball great and a lot of guys got wide open shots.
