Koenig Named Fairmont State Men's Basketball Coach.

After leading the Notre Dame College men's basketball program for the past six seasons as head coach and being the MEC Coach Of The Year this past season NDC coach Tim Koenig will be leaving the Falcons program to become the 13th head coach at Fairmont State. Replacing the departed Joe Mazulla who took a job as an NBA assistant under Brad Stevens with the Boston Celtics.

NDC athletic director Scott Swain released this statement about the coaching change:

" I would like to thank Tim for his tremendous service to the college and to Falcons athletics during his tenure. A search for Tim's replacement will begin immediately."Swain stated.

Koenig began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at NDC from 2006-2008. He was then hired as an assistant at NDC where he served as an assistant from 2009-2011. Koenig, then took a year away from the program in 2012 when he served as the Director Of Admission and Marketing at St. Peter's Chanel High School. He also served as an assistant at Lake Erie College during the 2012 school year.

During his six seasons as the head coach at NDC Koenig had a record of 93-85 overall and 60-70 in the MEC.

NDC guard Isaiah Sanders who will be a sophomore this upcoming season gave his thoughts about Koenig:

" TK is a great guy and a great coach and I loved playing for him. He pushed me on the court and in the classroom. I'm happy he got the opportunity to help better his family and I am blessed that he helped us lead us to a championship." Sanders mentioned.

Bruce Hodges will be a senior this upcoming season and gave his thoughts:

"TK is a great coach and he trusted me and believed in me. That is all that I ever asked for from a coach! He got the opportunity of a lifetime to better his family! At the end of the day we got a conference championship." Hodges said.

Amongst the highlights of his coaching career at NDC Koenig led the Falcons to an 89-87 win at top ranked West Liberty back on January 30,2014. This past season it was the first time ever in school history the Falcons had a 20 win regular season. They also won the school's first conference title when they defeated Fairmont State and West Liberty in back to back days at WesBanco Arena in Wheeling, West Va to win the MEC Championship. With the conference title Koenig and the Falcons made the school's first ever trip to the NCAA DII tournament. The Falcons earned the sixth seed and fell to third seeded Virginia State in the Atlantic region opening round on the campus of Indiana (Pa) at the Kovalchick Sports Complex.

Koenig talked about the new job:

" I would like to thank President Merta Melton/ Vice President Tim McNeely, and Direcor of Athletics Chad Fowler, as well as the board of governors and all supporters of the men's basketball program at Fairmont for believing in me and giving me this opportunity." Koenig stated.

Koenig continued:

" It is always a tough decision to move your family from where you grew up, but when this job was offered to me my family and I knew it was an opportunity that I could not pass up."

Koenig is a graduate of Case Western Reserve University, which is where he met his wife Nicole. They have two kids: Kyle (5) and Ella (one.) Koenig attended University School.
