The Notre Dame College Falcons were eliminated from MEC tournament action when they lost 83-68 to Glenville State College in the tournament quarterfinals at WesBanco Arena on Friday. Here were Coach Mark Richmond's thoughts afterwards:
"Obviously not the results we wanted. We have a really young team, and a lot of our guys had never been in that situation before. You have to grow, and learn from it,"Richmond explained.
The Coach continued:
"That game was kind of a microcosm of our whole season. We didn't start out so great, were playing really well in February, and we just couldn't get over the hump. It was a different year, and I am proud of our guys for battling though it."
The MEC did place a trio of teams in the Atlantic Region field that will begin on the campus of West Liberty on Saturday. Charleston (WV) got the two seed in the region after winning the regular season championship, the three seed went to West Liberty. The site of the tournament was predetermined, but West Liberty received an at large bid. Then on Sunday, Fairmont State played their way into the field as former NDC Coach Tim Koenig won his second MEC Championship in three years. Junior Isaiah Sanders, who won a championship at NDC as a Freshman won another yesterday as a Junior. Fifth year senior Jack Kelsheimer also won his second championship. Coaches Tim Baab and Pam Phillips were also amongst the group who won championships at both stops.
Koenig talked about the depth of the league (which should benefitNDC) after Sunday's win.
"You have to be ready every night in this league. We have had seven different champions since the MEC was formed in 2013, that speaks to the depth of the league. If their is a better league in the country I would like to see it,"Koenig explained.
