NDC Can't Get Over The Hump At Concord.

The Notre Dame College Falcons (3-4 2-2 MEC) scratched and clawed all day on Saturday at the Carter Center but ultimately fell 85-80 to the Concord Mountain Lions (5-3 2-2 MEC.) The Falcons had five players score in double figures in the loss.

"Played really hard today but not always smart, "Head Coach Mark Richmond explained."

NDC dug themselves an early hole as Concord would score the games first 12 points before Andre Harris finally got NDC on the scoreboard with two free throws at the 17:09 mark of the opening stanza. The first NDC bucket didn't come until the 16:26 mark when senior Daylin Lee nailed a triple. Down 17-5 the Falcons went on a 7-0 run as Tyland Crawford made a pair of free throws then Jaedon Willis made a layup and a 3-pointer. After Lee hit another three at the 13:44 mark the Falcons were within two (19-17.) The Falcons would get to within one on three different occasions but each time the Mountain Lions would have an answer. The Falcons would knot the game at 33 on a Barker layup at the 3:55 mark of the opening frame. CU would score the next six points, four by Moore to regain the lead. Willis and Lee would each hit a pair of free throws and NDC would trail by two (39-37) as the two teams headed to the locker room.

In the opening half NDC shot 34.5 percent, 50 percent (4-8) from the 3-point line, and 86.67 percent (13-15) from the free throw line.

The Mountain Lions shot 43.24 percent in the opening 20 minutes, 20 percent (2-10) from the 3-point line, and 83.3 percent (5-6) at the free throw line. The Mountain Lions also had a 22-20 edge on the boards in the first 20 minutes.

The second half started much like the first did as the Mountain Lions scored the first seven points to take a nine point lead (46-37.) The Falcons would go on a 7-0 run of their own as Jamarr Talbert drained a triple, made a layup, and Willis scored a basket to make it 46-44 CU with 15:44 on the clock. CU would again stretch the lead to seven (57-50) after a Heller 3-pointer. After a pair of free throws by Harris cut it to five a 3-ball by Wooden gave the Mountain Lions an eight point lead (60-52) with 10:07 to go. NDC would be down double digits until a Lee free throw and Adio basket cut the deficit to seven (67-60) with 6:45 on the clock. Again CU was up by double digits after a Heller basket with 4:52 to go. (73-62 CU.) NDC would pull to within six on an Adio 3-pointer with 2:54 to go. After Barker made a 3-pointer to get NDC within four (77-73) with 2:24 to go the Falcons looked to have life but that is as NDC would get.

NDC was led by the aforementioned five players in double figures. Barker led the way with 17, Lee and Willis each had 14, while Harris netted 12, and Adio added 11. As a team NDC shot 40 percent from the field, 41.2 percent (7-17) from the 3-point line, and 83.3 percent (25-30) at the free throw line. NDC had eight assists and 12 turnovers in this one.

Concord was paced by Laidler with 17, the trio of Heller, Rahama and Moore added 13, while Wooden tallied 11. CU shot 43.9 percent from the field, 31.6 percent (6-19) from the 3-point line, and 60 percent (21-35) at the free throw line. The Mountain Lions won the rebounding battle 47-33. They had 14 assists and 15 turnovers in the contest.

Richmond gave this thought:

"Had a chance to get the lead a couple times in the second half but we weren't able to get over the hump."

NDC will be back in action Wednesday when they travel to Davis & Elkins. Tip time is slated for 7:30 PM.
