NDC Digs Early Hole, Falls To Fairmont.

The Notre Dame College Falcons got off to a slow start, trailed by as many as 24 points in the second half before falling 94-84 to Fairmont State Wednesday night at Joe Retton Arena.

Coach Mark Richmond talked about the game afterwards:

" We weren't the aggressor to start the game. Let them get in rhythm and took a whole half to slow them down. We knew they had talented players who were going to make some shots but we fouled entirely too much. The number of points we gave them at the line was the difference, "Richmond explained.

NDC got on the board first as Tyland Crawford hit a pair of free throws to start the scoring. Then Isaiah Sanders hit his first of five -first half 3-pointers, to put Fairmont on top. Sanders third 3-pointer at the 14:47 mark of the opening half gave Fairmont a 20-6 lead. Zyon Dobbs hit a 3-pointer to stretch the Fairmont lead to 18 (25-7) before NDC went on a 6-0 run as Jordan Burton hit a pair of 3-pointer's to cut the lead to 12. NDC used another 6-0 run to get to within eight (34-26) after a Javontae Jones layup. It was a 56-42 halftime deficit for NDC heading into the locker room.

In the opening half NDC shot 45 percent from the field- 42 percent (5-12) from the 3-point line- and- 64 percent (7-11) at the free throw line. They were led in the half by Burton with 11- and- Roland with 10.

Fairmont was paced by Sanders with 22 in the opening half. Fairmont shot 55 percent from the field- 60 percent (9-15) from the 3-point line- and- 83 percent (15-18) from the free throw line in the opening stanza.

The second half saw NDC fight back on several occasions. NDC would trail by 24 (69-45) at the 15:19 mark, but would get the lead down to single digits with 1:48 to go after a Jones 3-pointer made it 86-77. A Marquise Johnson layup with 27 seconds would get NDC within seven, and that is as close as they would get.

NDC fell to 4-8 on the year as they shot 46 percent in the contest- as well as 46 percent (11-24) from the 3-point line. They struggled at the free throw line where they shot 53 percent (9-17.) Marquise Johnson paced NDC with 18 points- Burton knocked down four 3-pointer's en route to 16 points- Jordan Roland- and- Javontae Jones each had 12- while Tyland Crawford added 11. Mike Sampson led the Falcons with 14 rebounds as NDC won the rebounding battle 37-35. They had nine assists-and- 13 turnovers as a team.

Fairmont improved to 9-2, and was led by Sanders with a career high 31 points. He talked about his night:

" Tonight was just one of those nights I was feeling good, and my teammates continued to find me and show confidence in me. NDC is a really good team, and they showed it tonight. We play them again on Monday so we just have to make adjustments and continue to play the way we have been, "Sanders said.

Zyon Dobbs also had a career high with 21 points. He was joined by Von Handorf with 17- and- Bonner netted 15. Fairmont shot 49 percent from the field- 48 percent (12-25) from the 3-point line- and- 84 percent (32-38) from the free throw line. They had 16 assists- and- 11 turnovers as a team.
