Pair Scores In Double Figures As Falcons Road Woes Continue.

The Notre Dame College Falcons had a pair of players score in double figures but it was not enough as they fell to 3-6 on the road with a 80-66 loss at the Carter Center on the campus of Concord University Wednesday night. NDC falls to 10-9 and 7-6 in the MEC while the Mountain Lions improve to 8-10 and 6-7 in the MEC.

NDC Head Coach Mark Richmond gave his post game thoughts:

"Tough shooting night on the road at Concord,"Richmond mentioned. "We have a small margin for error particularly on the road. We've improved defensively so now we have to play well on both ends to win the games on the road."

NDC got on the board first with a Sam Jackson 3-pointer, but that would be the only lead they would have in the contest. The Mountain Lions would reel off the next 13 points capped off by a Brandon Kennedy 3-pointer at the 15:48 mark of the first half. The Falcons would run off the next six points as Daylin Lee made a pair of free throws and Mike Sampson would score a pair of layups. Kennedy would hit another 3-pointer to make the Concord lead seven (16-9.) After another Sampson layup Kennedy would hit the second of his five first half 3-pointer's to stretch the lead back to eight. After a Jackson layup at the 6:55 mark of the first half NDC was again within six (23-17.) Matt Weir and Ethan Heller would continue the hot shooting for Concord as they would both knock down 3-pointer's to get the lead back to 12 (29-17.) A layup and conventional three point play by Sampson and a Jackson layup would cut the lead to five (29-24) with just a few ticks over four minutes left in the opening half. Kennedy would hit another 3-pointer but Obinna Ugwuakazi would score five points off the NDC bench and his free throw to complete the and one cut the lead to four (33-29) with 2:15 in the half. Davion Moore made a layup but John Godinez knocked down a NDC triple to make it 35-32 Concord with 1:31 in the half. 19 seconds later Kennedy would knock down his fifth 3-pointer of the half and it was 38-32 Concord at halftime. Sampson led the Falcons with 11 points in the opening stanza, while Jackson tallied seven. As a team NDC shot 45 percent in the first half, 18 percent (2-11) from the 3-point line, and were a perfect four of four at the free throw line. NDC did dominate the paint in the opening stanza out scoring Concord 22-6.

The Mountain Lions were led by 15 points from Kennedy in the first stanza, while Jevon Laidler had seven. They shot 40 percent from the field, 47 percent (9-19) from the 3-point line, and 83 percent (5-6) from the free throw line in the first 20 minutes. They also led on the glass 16 rebounds to 11.

NDC got a layup by Sampson to open the second half before Laidler scored the next four Mountain Lions points. The Falcons then went on a 7-0 run as DeAirius Barker made a layup followed by a jumper and 3-ball by John Godinez that made it a one point game (42-41.) After a Concord hoop Lee again cut the lead to one (44-43) with 15:49 remaining. After Laidler and Jordan Wooden hit jumpers Lee connected on a jumper to make it 48-45 CU. The Mountain Lions would score the next five points before a Mike Kirkland layup cut the lead to six (53-47.) The Mountain Lions took control with a 9-0 run capped by a pair of Laidler free throws that stretched the lead to 15 (62-47) with 9:15 to go. The lead was cut to 12 (65-53) as Jaedon Willis scored his first three points of the game at the free throw line with 5:23 on the clock. After a Willis 3-pointer and a Tyland Crawford layup it was a 67-58 NDC deficit with 4:29 to go. Wooden knocked down a 3-pointer but NDC would answer with the next six points after a Godinez jumper with 2:31 left. The Mountain Lions would close the game on a 13-2 run to come away with the 80-66 win.

Godinez led the Falcons with 14 points and a team leading five assists while Sampson netted 13 to go with a team high 11 rebounds. Willis added nine. As a team the Falcons shot 40 percent from the field, 17 percent (4-23) from the 3-point line, and 77 percent (10-13) from the free throw line. They had 11 assists and 16 turnovers in the contest.

Laidler led the Mountain Lions with 20 points, Kennedy scored 15 of his 17 in the first half, while Weir and Wooden each tallied 12. Concord shot 42 percent from the field, 42 percent (14-33) from the 3-point line, and 75 percent (18-24) from the free throw line. Each team grabbed 32 rebounds. The Mountain Lions had 18 assists and 14 turnovers in the contest.

NDC will return home on Saturday when they will host Glenville State College. Tip time is slated for 4 PM.
