Spoiled Opener.

The Notre Dame College Falcons opened the home portion of the 2018-19 season on Tuesday as they welcomed the Redhawks of Roberts Wesleyan to Murphy Gym. But it was the Redhawks who came away with the 83-67 victory. With the win Wesleyan improved to 2-1 on the season- while the Falcons fell to 2-1 with the defeat.

Will Vorhees led NDC with 20 points and 11 rebounds in the contest- he was one of three players who scored in double figures. Isaiah Sanders tallied 14 points- and- Halil Parks added 11 in the defeat. NDC shot 40 percent from the floor in the game- but just 28 percent (8-29) from the 3-point line. They shot 82 percent (9-11) at the free throw line. The Falcons had 13 assists and 15 turnovers.

The Redhawks were led by Reggie Clark, who scored a game high 25 points. They had three other players in double figures, as Isaiah Lewis scored 15 points- Peyton McLaurin chipped in 13- and- Justin Vaughan netted 12. The Redhawks shot 39 percent from the field- 39 percent from the 3-point line (14-36) and shot at a 83 percent clip (19-23) from the free throw line. The Redhawks won the rebounding battle 44-33. They had 15 assists and 14 turnovers in the contest.

Wesleyan got off to a 9-4 lead to start the game. Then NDC would rip off a 11-0 run to go up 15-9 on a Drew Scarberry 3-pointer with 11:49 in the opening half. After a Jacob Sala basket NDC would lead by eight (25-17) with 7:59 in the half. Wesleyan would rip off a 10-0 run that would give them a 27-25 lead after another Clark 3-pointer. Hamish Warden would knock down a 3-pointer to give NDC the lead back with 3:24 in the half. Wesleyan would go on another 10-0 run that would give them a nine point lead (37-28) after a Lewis jumper with 51 seconds in the half. A conventional three-point play by Vorhees would cut the lead to six (37-31) at halftime.

The Redhawks would score the first five points of the second half to open up a double digit lead. After a Sanders 3-pointer with 15:35 to go the Falcons would be within seven (48-41.) The 3-point shooting of the Redhawks would continue to give them the lead they needed as McLaurin and Bush would hit from the 3-point line. The 11 point deficit (56-45) after a pair of Sanders free throws would be as close as NDC would get the rest of the way. Wesleyan would lead by as many as 22 and would cruise to victory from there.

NDC Coach Tim Koenig talked about the contest:

" We need to perform when the lights come on. We need everyone on our roster. We did not play defense and rebound the way we need to. Obviously we need to take care of the ball better as well. We have harped on those three things this year. We will continue to do that and we will get better." Koenig said."

Koenig spoke about Wesleyan as a team:

" They are really good. They were pretty darn good last year and as you saw tonight they are pretty good now."

The Falcons will be back in action Saturday when they travel to Concord to face the Mountain Lions. Tip time is set for 4 PM and you can catch all the action on NotreDameFalcons.com
