Taking Care Of Business!

The Notre Dame College Falcons battled Wheeling University inside of Murphy Gym on Wednesday night. The Falcons would get pay back for a 31 point loss that they suffered back in November- as Wednesday they would get the 72-62 win.

Bruce Hodges talked about how NDC played with a chip on there shoulder:

" We didn't want to let them embarrass us like they did the first time we played them. We definitely played with a chip on our shoulder tonight. We really communicated especially on the defensive end. Drew was the main guy who was talking a lot tonight- telling us when someone was coming in our area."Hodges mentioned.

Hodges continued about what it was like to get some confidence tonight:

" It has been tough year for me on offense. It was good to see some shots go in. I have been dealing with a little torn ligament in my thumb."

DeAnthony Owens talked about the game plan and the game Hodges had:

" We had a great game plan tonight. We were focused all week in practice. As for Bruce you can't say enough about him. He scored 16 points- 15 in the first half. He was six of 10 from the field. Those six makes were huge. He is just a hard worker who makes the right play."Owens said.

NDC (5-12 3-8 MEC) was paced by Drew Scarberry with 21 points who scored 19 of his 21 in the second half- Levi Frankland added 18- and- Hodges scored 15 of his 16 in the first half. Owens led the Falcons on the glass with 11 rebounds.

Coach Mark Richmond explained how two guys really impacted the game without scoring much:

" DeAnthony was one of eight but had 11 rebounds- while Jordan Burton had only one turnover as he played all 40 minutes of this one."Richmond explained.

NDC shot 45 percent from the field- 41 percent (9-22) from the 3-point line- and- 72 percent (13-18) at the free throw line. The Falcons won won the rebounding battle 37-36. They had 14 assists- and- five turnovers in this one.

Richmond spoke about holding Wheeling to one shot:

" All in all we did a really good job on the glass. The rebounding in the first half was the difference in the game. They threw some shots up and rebounded it late. Jordan Reid is a really good rebounder- and- he had nine. They started a new lineup because they knew we were going to play some zone."

Wheeling (9-6 6-5 MEC) was led by Jarrett Haines- and- Jordan Reid who each scored 15- while Geron Braithwaite chipped in 12. The Cardinals shot 38 percent as a team- 29 percent (8-28) from the 3-point line- and- 73 percent (8-11) from the free throw line. They had eight assists- and- eight turnovers as a team.

Richmond talked about the defensive effort:

"To hold anybody in this league to 62 points is hard to do. I commend our effort."

Hodges talked about pushing out the Wheeling offense:

" When we get the other team to shoot 3-pointer's from the volleyball line that is really good defense. As I said earlier we really communicated well tonight."

The two teams would go back and forth for the first few minutes before Frankland would convert a four-point play at the 14:51 mark of the half that gave NDC a 11-7 lead. Dan Lott would hit a 3-pointer of his own- and- the Falcons would lead by seven (14-7.) The Cardinals would fight back and take a 20-19 lead after a Zach Collins 3-ball at the 10:54 mark of the half. NDC would score the next seven points (five by Hodges-) and- after a Hodges 3-pointer at the 8:38 mark NDC led 26-20. Collins would hit another 3-pointer at the 7:03 mark to make it 28-25 NDC. It would be 33-29 Falcons after Haines drained a 3-pointer at the 3:40 mark of the half. NDC would close the half by scoring the last six points- and- the Falcons defense would hold the Cardinals scoreless for the rest of the half. Hodges would score four of those points- while Jacob Sala added a pair of free throws. NDC was led in the opening half by Hodges with 15- while Frankland had 11. The Falcons shot 50 percent from the field- 50 percent from the 3-point line (5-10-) and- 75 percent (6-8) from the free throw line in the opening 20 minutes. NDC won the rebounding battle 22-12 in the opening stanza. The Falcons had six assists- and- two turnovers in the opening half.

Wheeling was led by Collins with eight- while Reid had seven. Wheeling shot 38 percent from the field- 36 percent from the 3-point line (5-14-) and- 67 percent (2-3) from the free throw line in the opening stanza. They had five assists- and- one turnover in the half.

Scarberry opened the second half with a 3-pointer to stretch the Falcons lead to 13- before Wheeling would run off the next five points. A 7-0 run would cut the Falcons lead to three (46-43) but Owens would make a layup to stretch the lead back to five. The Falcons had a 53-45 lead at the halfway point. The Falcons would stretch the lead back to 10 (59-49) after a Frankland 3-pointer with 7:53 to go. The Cardinals would not go away as they would score the next six points as Haines made a pair of free throws at the 5:16 mark to make it 59-55. Scarberry would go on a personal 6-0 run to make it 65-55- and- then a basket by Frankland would all but put this one out of reach at the 1:51 mark. NDC would close this one out at the free throw line.

Richmond talked about his team making winning plays:

" We had two guys in DeAnthony, who did not shoot well today- and- Burton who played the whole game who just made winning plays. We just found a way to win. I have been preaching to these guys all year that together collectively if we be scrappy- gang rebound- fight- and- claw we can come out with a win like we did tonight.:

He continued about the offense tonight:

" We played inside- outside today which was good. We did not make as many shots as we would like but we got the win."

Owens talked about the teams mantra and having three home games in a week:

" We have said all year that we have each others backs. We have three home games in a week- and- I feel like if we keep playing hard- and- together like we have been especially offensively we can get a streak going and move up in the standings.

NDC will look to do that on Saturday when they host Urbana. Tip time is set for 4 PM at Murphy Gym.
