Three Have Big Days As Falcons Fall.

The Notre Dame College Falcons had a good day offensively- but it was not quite enough as they fell 97-90 to the West Virginia State Yellow Jackets at the Walker Convocation Center. With the loss NDC falls to 9-17 and 7-13 in the MEC. WVSU improves to 18-7 and 13-7 in the MEC with the victory.

NDC was led by 26 points and seven rebounds from Drew Scarberry- Levi Frankland netted 22- and- DeAnthony Owens tallied 20 of his own. Bruce Hodges also stuffed the stat sheet with nine points- seven rebounds- five assists- and- a pair of steals. The Falcon shot 55 percent for the game- 40 percent (8-20) from the 3-point line- and- 80 percent (16-20) at the free throw line. NDC won the rebounding battle 37-36. They had 17 assists- and- 16 turnovers in the contest.

The Yellow Jackets were led by Glen Abram with 28 points- while Michal Seals added 24 points and six assists- Isaiah Noel added 10. WVSU shot 49 percent from the field- 38 percent (11-29) from the 3-point line- and- 70 percent (14-20) from the foul line. They had 18 assists- and- nine turnovers in the contest.

NDC got off to a fast start in this one as Scarberry scored 10 of the team's first 14 points. His 3-ball at the 15 minute mark of the opening half gave the Falcons a 14-5 lead. The Yellow Jackets would tie the game at 16 after a Noel layup at the 11:16 mark of the opening half. Owens would hit a 3-pointer for NDC a 8:47 mark to give the Falcons a 23-20 advantage. The two teams would trade baskets for the rest of the half as the game would be knotted at 37 as the teams headed to the locker room.

Scarberry and Frankland led the Falcons with 12 each in the first 20 minutes. They shot 52 percent from the field- 38 percent (3-8) from the 3-point line- and- 80 percent (8-10) from the free throw line in the opening stanza. NDC led on the boards 20-16 in the half. They had seven assists- and- six turnovers in the stanza.

The Yellow Jackets were led by Seals and Abram with six points each in the first half. They shot 41 percent from the field- 29 percent (4-14) from the 3-point line- and- made all three attempts from the free throw line. They had six assists- and- two turnovers in the half.

WVSU started the half on a 7-0 run before a Frankland bucket by NDC. The deficit was 10 after a Seals 3-pointer at the 16:46 mark. The Falcons would score the next six points- four by Hodges and two by Owens to get to within four. It was a 11 point NDC deficit (56-45) after a Seals basket. NDC would go on a 13-2 run that tied the game at 58 after a Frankland layup with 11:37 on the clock. WVSU would answer with a 8-0 run of their own before a Frankland triple made it a 66-61 deficit. A 9-0 run by the home team would make the score 79-65 WVSU with under eight minutes to go. At the 4:15 mark NDC trailed 89-70 but they would not go down without showing some fight. It was 92-74 at the 3:14 mark as NDC started a possible comeback. With 30 seconds left a pair of Scarberry free throws made it 94-88. Seals would hit a pair of free throws- but Ryan Cartaino scored a tip in. One last free throw by WVSU would account for the final score.

Coach Mark Richmond gave credit to West Virginia State afterwards:

" A few too many turnovers and just couldn't get enough stops in the half court. Have to give them credit because they made plays and we couldn't overcome the run they made in the second half."Richmond explained.
