Three In Double Figures As NDC Falls On The Road.

Jaedon Willis scored 20 points, Tyland Crawford tallied 13 points to go along with 10 rebounds, DeAirius Barker netted 11 off the bench, and Mike Sampson grabbed 12 rebounds in a 83-73 Notre Dame College (9-6 6-3 MEC) loss at the Walker Convocation Center on Wednesday night.

Head Coach Mark Richmond talked about what he thought tonight:

"We were not good enough on either end of the floor tonight, "Richmond mentioned. "Credit West Virginia State they have a long, athletic team.

The Yellow Jackets (10-5 5-3 MEC) jumped out to a 8-2 lead as they won for the sixth straight game. After a three-point play by Noah Jordan it was 14-5 in favor of WVSU. A pair of Crawford free throws and a Daylin Lee hoop cut the lead to five at the first media timeout. The Falcons would knot the game at 16 on a Willis 3-pointer with 10:58 in the first stanza. The game was tied four more times in the next two and a half minutes. Barker would split a pair of free throws at the 6:52 mark as the game was knotted at 25. The Falcons briefly took the lead (27-26) on a Gbolohan Adio dunk with 5:09 in opening half. After Anthony Pittman knocked down a 3-pointer Adio tied the game again, this time at 29. WVSU would close the half on a 14-2 run to take a 12 points lead (43-31) into the locker room.

Willis and Crawford led NDC with seven in the opening half, while Barker netted five. NDC shot 39 percent from the field, went just 1 of 8 from the 3-point line, and shot at a 80 percent clip (4-5) from the free throw line in the opening stanza. They were out-rebounded 21-16 in the opening half. NDC had one assist and four turnovers in the first 20 minutes.


WVSU was paced by Pittman with 15 in the first half, Dwaine Jones added 12, and Jordan scored six. The Yellow Jackets shot 53 percent from the field, 40 percent (4-10) from the 3-point line, and 60 percent (3-5) from the free throw line in the half. They had six assists and six turnovers as a team in the first 20 minutes.


NDC cut into the lead in the first three minutes of the second half. The Yellow Jackets went cold from the field to start the half and NDC cut the lead to six (43-37) after a Sampson layup at the 17 minute mark. The lead was 11 (53-42) before a Barker jumper and a Mike Kirkland 3-pointer made it 53-47 with 12:53 to go. NDC cut the lead to five again (61-56) after a Willis jumper at the 9:29 mark. A NDC technical foul ensued after that basket and WVSU scored the next three points. A 3-pointer by Crawford with 8:10 to go once again cut the lead to five (64-59.) A Willis jumper and a 3-pointer by Willis made it a 69-65 Yellow Jackets lead with 5:39 on the clock. Moore threw down a dunk for WVSU but Jamarr Talbert buried a 3-pointer to pull NDC within three (71-68) with 4:29 to go. A 7-0 spurt by WVSU stretched the lead back to 10 (78-68) with 1:17 to go. WVSU would close it out from there.

NDC shot 45 percent from the field, 29 percent (6-21) from the 3-point line, and 64 percent (7-11) at the free throw line. They had five assists and 10 turnovers in the contest.

WVSU had five players in double figures led by Jones with 19,Pittman added 17 to go along with 11 rebounds, Abram scored 16, Jordan had 15, and Jeremiah Moore netted 12 to go along with 10 rebounds and four steals. As a team WVSU shot 44 percent from the field, 26 percent (5-19) from the 3-point line, and 69 percent (20-29) from the free throw line. WVSU won the rebounding battle 44-37. They had 14 assists and 10 turnovers on the game.

Richmond gave his final thoughts:

"They (WVSU) did a good job on the glass and forced us into some bad shots. We did some good things in spurts during the game but to beat good teams on the road you have to play a complete game."
